Cannabis Relieves Nerve Pain From Lyme Disease, Fibromyalgia, & Associated Conditions
September 17, 2014 by Shelley M. White

The Role of the Endocannabinoid System in Nerve Pain

The endocannabinoid system’s importance as a neuromodulatory system in the brain has recently began to surface in research.

The brain’s endocannabinoid neuromodulatory system is involved in a plethora of physiological functions related to pain, leading scientists to hypothesize that individuals with Fibromyalgia pain have dysfunctional endocannabinoid neuromodulatory systems, thus lending to their grand hypothesis that the cannabinoids in cannabis can bind with malfunctioning CB1 (cannabinoid receptor type 1) and CB2 (cannabinoid receptor type 2) receptors in the brain’s endocannabinoid neuromodulatory system to repair the malfunction and relieve the patient of pain.

TOUCHED BY LYME: “Change will not happen as long as Lymies are invisible”

More than 100 Lyme advocates held a "silent vigil" outside the New York Times building this week, joined by a group of silent dancers. They were protesting the media's silence on Lyme disease and called for more and better coverage of the subject. Paula Kozinn took pictures at the event and shares the following observations.

Effective treatment of Lyme-disease-related arthritis depends on proper diagnosis
February 2, 2011, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons

Lyme arthritis can be defined as a painful, swollen joint, that causes a stiffness similar to osteoarthritis, and occurs most commonly in the late stages of Lyme disease, usually several months after the onset of the disease. About 60 percent of patients who are left untreated for Lyme disease in its early stages will develop Lyme arthritis, Dr. Cruz said.

"Lyme arthritis occurs when the spirochete, the bacteria that causes the disease, invades the joints and causes inflammation to the tissue that lines the joints," he said. "If left untreated, this inflammatory response can cause the cartilage within the joints to become damaged."

Dr. Cruz said most cases of Lyme arthritis are brief and involve a single joint, most typically the knee. The ankle, elbow, hip and wrist may also be affected, and some patients may develop a fever.

Chronic Lyme disease can seriously affect a person’s quality of life

My daughter had lost 20 pounds and suffered from nausea, joint pain, dizziness and flulike symptoms.

After two trips to the top disease specialists at Johns Hopkins and several blood tests that came back negative for Lyme, she happened to accompany me to a veterinary appointment for my dog. I explained what was going on with my daughter to the veterinarian. He said that the type of blood test they did for Lyme disease would not come back positive until the disease had progressed to the later stages.

My daughter finally saw a Lyme specialist..

The doctor also tested for the co-infections of Babesia and Erlichia, which, if present, must be treated prior to treating Lyme disease; otherwise, the antibiotic for Lyme will not be effective. It turned out that my daughter tested positive for these two co-infections as well as for Lyme disease. (Babesia is a relative of malaria.)

New Yorkers Call Lyme Disease the New Plague
Tuesday, 23 September 2014 17:36
By Jessica Bernstein, Truthout | Report

Rates of Lyme disease have rapidly escalated in recent years with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announcing in 2013 that rather than 30,000 new Lyme cases annually, there's an estimated 300,000.

But other Lyme disease experts estimate that there are likely 1 to 2 million new cases per year.
