What/Why

The Blood Working Group has 4 "trials" with XMRV in ME/CFS patients that they are running. Phase I was to set up the four labs of which the WPI, CDC, FDA and another one tested their ability to find XMRV in spiked samples. That one was completed a couple months ago.

Phase II is how to find XMRV in ME/CFS patients and it will define the "gold standard" that is used from here on out. The protocols that are necessary in order to find XMRV in patients include handling, storage, primers, assays - the whole shebang.

The Phase II portion should have been finished and the information released no later than the first week of November. They talked about it at the First International XMRV Conference in September, indicating they almost had it worked out and then. At the October CFSAC meeting they promised to release the information as soon as it was ready. The available information indicated the results have been released to a portion of the scientific community but not to the patient population or researchers at large.

Since the release of the information to the patient population would allow us to compare the "correct" way to find XMRV to all the other "ways" that people are trying to find XMRV then it's pretty important that the information be available to us. Plus, it settles the "contamination" question once and for all.

The release of this information is critical to patients, researchers world-wide as well the general public. Ask them to make good on their promise.

How

1) Send an email a day to the list below demanding the release of the BWG Phase 2 Results now as was promised at the CFSAC in October.

2) It would be advisable to vary the subject line day-to-day to help get past the spam filters.

3) Please send to the following. At a minimum please include the top 5 names plus the chair and co-chair. Scroll down for lists to paste into your mail client.

Dear Blood Working Group Member

Your work is of vital importance to me as a patient. I have spent years educating myself in an effort to work with uncooperative doctors, to educate family and friends and to help myself. I need be able to understand the research that is being done right now and I need your help to do this. Please, release the results of the Phase II trials recently completed so that I can validate research that is being published regarding XMRV.

The NIH seems to be taking the ME/CFS community to heart for the first time in decades and I would challenge your agency to open the lines of communication and to open them wide. Keep us informed of the results of the trials and the working of the NIH in regards to ME/CFS and lets build a working relationship now and in the future.

I am requesting the information from the Phase II trials be released to an advocacy group, or to the community media no later than Dec. 3, 2010.

Blood Working Group Responds - A Little - almost a week after emails were sent out requesting the status of the BWG's findings Dr. Holmberg, the co-chair of the group, did respond. After a rather pro-forma beginning - this is what we've done - see how public we've been thus far, he ended with a pro forma response - Phase II is not done yet.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the activities of the Blood XMRV Scientific Working Group which was received both by Dr. Glynn and myself. The mission of the Working Group has been reported at several venues. The methodical process has been tracked in various phases, phase I-IV. The results of phase I are available and have been reported at the first XMRV Retrovirus Workshop (http://www.virology-education.com/index ... rkshop_on_ XMRV/vid/1FF10297-0DC4-5841-64634A68A3EC3EF1). Phase II required institutional review board (IRB) approvals and consists of pilot studies to evaluate how to best decrease the variability in sample preparation. As a result, Phase II is in progress and there are no results to report yet. We will report results when available.

in die buzz geeft hij toch aan dat aan hem is gemaild "Phase II is not done yet."

ach ja, ik ben het met je eens dat het veel te lang duurt, en we weten ook niet of BWG wel de waarheid spreekt, met de uitspraak dat het onderzoek nog niet is afgerond.
misschien willen ze het nieuws gewoon niet brengen, zonder dat ze er een goed lulverhaal omheen hebben gebouwd tav damage control, met name richting het cdc

het is ook amper te volgen, eerst die pnas studie die maanden vertraagd werd, en nu weer de blood working group, die eerst roept dat fase 2 zeker begin november is afgerond, om het vervolgens weer in te trekken.
we weten ook niet welke belangen/machten er allemaal achter het scherm meespelen, enz...

ik hoop dat we snel duidelijkheid hebben, volgens mij is de volgende meeting van de BWG ergens medio december, dus hoop dat ze dan toch onderhand wat naar buiten brengen (liefst eerder natuurlijk)

ja cort zal vast meer weten..

de patients advocate blog ( http://cfspatientadvocate.blogspot.com/ ... up_13.html) laat ook doorschemeren dat er toch al wat bekend is...

maar ja het blijft speculatie wat er precies van waar is...

daarom kan mailen geen kwaad, we hebben allemaal al lang genoeg gewacht, wat druk erop vanuit patienten kan geen kwaad

Ik heb de thread net bekeken en Cort denkt zelf dat ze liegen wanneer ze schrijven dat ze nog bezig zijn met phase II.
Hij roept iedereen op om te mailen:


Hmmm it still puts us on the horns of dilemma on how to proceed with the campaign. Since all we are asking for this "protocol" itself not the results of how many patients are positive and how many are negative, I say push it. We are asking for a very specific thing, the write up of the protocol that is being recommended for use among the labs.

The Phase II Dustup Campaign Continues - patients upset with the Blood Working Groups reluctance to keep a ME/CFS Community, that's sitting on the edge of its collective seat, of the progress of their work, now have a place to go. Otis on the PR Forums has created a nice advocacy website with names and numbers to email. The BWG may not be able to release the results now but they can certainly be more forthcoming.
