De stichting krijgt veel vragen van lymepatiënten over bloeddonaties. Sinds maart 2014 is het beleid van Sanquin gewijzigd. Zij houden voornamelijk rekening met de conditie (fitheid) van de donor wanneer deze de ziekte van Lyme heeft of heeft gehad. Bij medicijngebruik dient er contact met de bloedbank opgenomen te worden. Na een tekenbeet, bij de ziekte van Lyme of wanneer deze ziekte doorgemaakt is, mag er bloed gegeven worden. Er zouden geen aanwijzingen zijn voor mogelijke overdracht via bloedtransfusie (1).
Bij navraag blijft een overzicht van bewijs hiervoor echter uit. Onzes inziens zijn er geen of nauwelijks harde bewijzen dat Borrelia via bloedtransfusie wel of niet overdraagbaar is, maar het is ook nog nooit goed onderzocht. Het risico bij orgaandonatie is waarschijnlijk veel groter, maar ook dat is nauwelijks onderzocht.
De beschikbare kennis geeft voldoende aanleiding om voorzichtig te zijn, o.a. het feit dat ook bij ‘uitbehandelde’ en niet-symptomatische lymepatiënten nog lange tijd levende spirocheten aanwezig kunnen zijn in organen en het bloed.
Daarentegen bestaat er al een studie uit 1990 waarin geconcludeerd wordt dat Borrelia spirocheten de bewerkingen voor bloedtransfusies overleven (o.a. zes weken koeling van geïnfecteerde rode bloedcellen) en er daarom theoretisch de mogelijkheid bestaat van overdracht via bloedtransfusies (2).
De stichting is van mening dat een risico moet leiden tot uitsluiten van bloeddonatie. Het Internationale Rode Kruis is van mening dat lymepatiënten geaccepteerd kunnen worden als bloeddonor, wanneer de ziekte behandeld is en er een jaar verstreken is zonder klachten. Chronische lymepatiënten komen niet in aanmerking voor bloeddonatie (3). Stichting Tekenbeetziekten sluit zich aan bij deze stellingname.

Babesiosis, a potentially fatal and rapidly spreading tick-borne disease with malaria-like symptoms, is contaminating our nation’s blood supply. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 162 cases of babesiosis have been transmitted by blood transfusion since 1979, and at least 26 people have died after receiving blood tainted with the disease. But the number of those infected is likely to be dramatically higher because there is no reliable test to diagnose the disease and no test available to screen the blood supply for it. As a result, many sufferers are never aware they are infected.

It does not take at least 24 hours for a tick to transmit Lyme disease. Although most ticks take about that long or longer, many people are becoming infected in less time than that. Dr. Willy Burgdorfer said at a Lyme disease conference at Bard College in 1999 that about 5-10% of ticks that are carrying Lyme disease have a systemic infection and have the disease in their saliva and can transmit it as soon as they bite. He said, “There is no safety window.” That means that all statements that say it takes “at least” so many days or hours for a tick to transmit Lyme disease are false.
